The Otolaryngological Survey of "Hae-nyo", Korean Diving Fisherwomen


Abstract
The otolaryngological examination of 200 "Hae-nyo", Korean diving fisherwomen, and 100 control group, at Young-do island in Pusan, were carried and got the following results.
1. Most of the cases were 30 decades of age, working year continued 20 years more in average, and customarily, they work 5 fathoms deep in depth.
2. Subjective symptoms were noted as vertigo (49 per cent), headache (50 per cent), tinnitus (20 per cent), and deafness (12 per cent).
3. Diseases as the cloudness of the tympanic membrane (85 per cent), the septal deviation (83 per cent), and the tubal stenosis (79 per cent) were obtained.
4. As regards the audiograms, the hearing was impared in all cases of "Hae-nyo" in the ratio of 62 per cent under 40 decibel loss, 28 per cent between 40 to 60 decibel loss, and 10 per cent over 60 decibel loss. And also, they were worse progression in proportion to an age and the working year.
5. 65.5 per cent of the cases was diagnosed as the chronic hypertrophic rhinitis.
6. The tumor biopsy was done from the osseous wall of the canal, and histopathologically, it was diagnosed as the exostosis.
7. Other diseases also obtained as the hypertrophia tonsillae 30 per cent, the sinusits 17.5 per cent, the otitis media 8.5 per cent, and the atrophic rhinitis 5 per cent.
8. In incidence of the diseases were proportioned with the working year and an age.
9. No significant differentiations with the caloric test was found.
